Common Door Problems and How to Fix Them
Over time, even the sturdiest doors can start to show signs of wear and tear. From annoying creaks to more serious structural issues, understanding what's going wrong with your door is the first step toward fixing it.
Sticking Doors: A sticking door is often the result of changes in humidity or the house settling over time. The wood can swell, making the door rub against the frame. Try tightening the hinges first. If that doesn't work, carefully sand down the edge that's sticking and repaint or reseal it to protect against moisture.
Squeaky Hinges: One of the most common (and irritating) issues. Luckily, it's also one of the easiest to fix. Spray a small amount of WD-40 or apply petroleum jelly to the hinge pins. Open and close the door a few times to work the lubricant in.
Misaligned Locks: If your key doesn't turn smoothly or your lock feels off-centre, it may be due to a sagging door. Check all screws in the hinges and strike plate. Tightening them or adjusting the plate's position can restore smooth operation.
Drafty Doors: Feeling a cold breeze even when the door is shut? It's likely due to worn weatherstripping. Replacing it with new foam or rubber strips can dramatically improve your comfort and reduce energy bills.
